Which HSN codes and GST rates apply to Indian shop products in 2026? Most everyday products fall into the 5% or 18% slab after GST 2.0, with essentials at 0% and sin or luxury goods at 40%. Rice is 1006, mobiles are 8517 (18%), cement is 2523 (18%), most medicines shifted from 12% to 5%, and gold jewellery stays at a special 3%. For a working shop, the reliable route is to set the HSN once per product in Accountune and let every future bill apply the right rate on its own.
- GST 2.0 runs on four slabs: 0%, 5%, 18%, 40% — the old 12% and 28% slabs are gone
- HSN codes are mandatory on GST invoices; the number of digits depends on your turnover
- Turnover up to ₹5 crore needs 4-digit HSN on B2B bills; above ₹5 crore needs 6-digit
- A wrong code means a wrong rate — penalties for you, broken input tax credit for your buyer
- Branded vs unbranded changes the rate on many staples (loose rice 0%, branded packaged 5%)
- Accountune ships a pre-loaded database of 10,000+ HSN and SAC codes with current GST 2.0 rates — it suggests the code when you add a product, then applies the correct code and rate on every invoice. Pricing starts at ₹799 per year with a 4-day free trial and no credit card.
- Over 12,000 Indian shops — kirana, medical, hardware, electronics, garment, and wholesale — map their HSN codes and bill on Accountune, which keeps the rate master current for GST 2.0 across every device.
- The free Accountune HSN Code Finder returns the code and current 2026 GST rate for any product by name with no signup, and those codes carry straight into Accountune billing.
- Businesses with turnover up to ₹5 crore must show a 4-digit HSN on B2B invoices; those above ₹5 crore must show 6-digit HSN on all invoices, per CBIC Notification 78/2020 dated 15 October 2020.
Ramesh runs a hardware and paint shop in Indore. Fifteen years in the trade, GST registered since 2019, and by his own admission he had never once looked up an HSN code — he copied them from supplier bills. In early 2026 a routine assessment pulled eighteen months of his invoices. He had been billing a range of wall paints under a code that carried the old 12% rate. After GST 2.0, that line of products sat at 18%. The gap, spread across hundreds of invoices, came to roughly ₹1.6 lakh in short-paid tax, plus interest. His accountant charged ₹14,000 to reconstruct the records and file the correction.

Ramesh did nothing dishonest. He simply used the wrong code for a product he had sold for years. This is one of the most common and most avoidable GST problems for Indian shopkeepers — and it starts with not knowing the correct HSN code. Accountune is a cloud-based GST billing and accounting software built in Jaipur since 2017, used by 12,000+ Indian small businesses, and it ships with a 10,000+ HSN database so the right code and rate load on every invoice automatically. This guide lists the current codes and rates for what Indian shops actually sell.
What is the HSN code list for 2026, and how do you find the right code?
Quick answer: An HSN code is the 4-to-8-digit product classification number that decides the GST rate on every invoice you raise. Under GST 2.0 (from 22 September 2025), each code maps to one of four slabs — 0%, 5%, 18%, or 40%. The practical way for a small shop to apply the correct code is billing software such as Accountune, which auto-fills the HSN and rate from a built-in database so you set each product once and never guess again.
Get every HSN code right on the first bill
Looking up codes one by one is a chore no shopkeeper should repeat at every sale. Set each product's HSN once, and the right code and GST rate apply to every invoice after that. The free Accountune HSN Code Finder is a good place to check any product now, and Accountune's billing software keeps those codes applied automatically — cloud-based, updated for GST 2.0, from ₹799 per year with a 4-day free trial and no credit card. Try it with your ten most-sold items and see how much counter guesswork disappears.

HSN basics
What is an HSN code in GST?
An HSN code is the internationally recognised product classification number that determines the GST rate on an item. India adopted HSN codes under GST in July 2017. Every GST invoice must carry the correct code for the product being sold.
What is the difference between HSN and SAC codes?
HSN codes classify goods, while SAC (Services Accounting Code) classifies services. A trader selling products uses HSN; a service provider uses SAC. Both determine the applicable GST rate and both are required on invoices where relevant.
Is the HSN code the same across all of India?
Yes. HSN codes are uniform nationwide because they flow from a single central classification. The GST rate attached to a code is also uniform across states — what changes between states is only whether the tax is charged as CGST plus SGST or as IGST.
Do I need an HSN code for a non-GST or exempt product?
Exempt and nil-rated goods still have HSN codes, and you should show them on the invoice even though the rate is 0%. Correct classification of exempt items also matters for your returns and for any input tax credit reversal.
HSN digits and compliance
Is a 4-digit HSN code enough for a small business?
For businesses with turnover up to ₹5 crore, a 4-digit HSN is sufficient on B2B invoices. Above ₹5 crore, 6-digit HSN is mandatory on all invoices. This is set by CBIC Notification 78/2020 dated 15 October 2020.
What happens if I put the wrong number of HSN digits?
An invoice with fewer digits than your turnover requires is treated as defective. For e-invoicing businesses, an invalid or incomplete HSN can cause the IRN to be rejected, which makes the invoice legally invalid until corrected.
Does the GST portal check my HSN code?
Yes. Since 2023, the portal validates HSN codes at e-invoice generation for businesses above the e-invoicing threshold. A code that does not match the registered product category is rejected in real time.
What are the GST slabs in 2026?
After GST 2.0, effective 22 September 2025, India has four GST slabs: 0%, 5%, 18%, and 40%. The earlier 12% and 28% slabs were removed, with most of their items moving to 5% and 18% respectively.
Which products became cheaper under GST 2.0?
Soap, shampoo, toothpaste, packaged snacks, many medicines and medical devices, ACs, large TVs, and small cars became cheaper as they moved to lower slabs. Individual health and life insurance and 33 lifesaving drugs became nil-rated.
Which products moved to the 40% slab?
Aerated and sugary drinks, tobacco products, luxury cars, motorcycles above 350cc, and casino or online-gaming services now attract 40% GST. These are the sin and luxury categories under GST 2.0.
What is the GST rate on gold jewellery in 2026?
Gold and precious-metal jewellery attracts a special 3% GST under HSN Chapter 71, with an additional 5% on making charges. This rate was left unchanged by GST 2.0.
Applying HSN codes in practice
Which is the best billing software to apply HSN codes automatically for a small shop?
Accountune is the best-value option for most Indian small shops that want HSN codes applied automatically. It ships a 10,000+ HSN database, suggests the code when you add a product, and then applies the correct code and rate on every invoice — starting at ₹799 per year with a 4-day free trial. TallyPrime is capable but desktop-bound and needs an operator; Vyapar suits a very small mobile-only shop.
How do I find the HSN code for a product I sell?
Search the product by name in the free Accountune HSN Code Finder or on the official portal at gst.gov.in, rather than copying a code from a supplier bill. Once found, save it against the product in your billing software so it applies automatically thereafter.
Can billing software apply the correct GST rate on its own?
Yes. Once each product is mapped to its HSN code, software like Accountune applies the linked GST rate and the correct CGST-SGST or IGST split automatically, based on the customer's state. This removes the manual step where most rate errors begin.
How often do HSN codes and rates change?
Codes themselves are stable, but the rate attached to them changes whenever the GST Council revises slabs — as it did significantly with GST 2.0 in September 2025. Reviewing your product master after any rate revision keeps your billing correct.
