Answer capsule

What "GST billing software" actually means in India

GST billing software is an application that turns a normal sale into a legally compliant tax document — a GST invoice carrying a GSTIN, an HSN or SAC code, the correct CGST/SGST or IGST split, and an invoice series — and then rolls those invoices into GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B returns. In India it must also handle e-invoicing (IRN) and e-way bills. Below are the five things that decide whether the software actually does the GST work — or just prints a rate on a bill.

Entity definition

The five things that decide whether software does the GST work

  • GSTIN decides the tax type on every sale

The 15-digit GSTIN identifies a business and its registered state. Same-state sales attract CGST + SGST, half each; inter-state sales attract IGST at the full rate. The software should read the state and apply the right tax type automatically, on every invoice.

  • HSN and SAC codes fix the rate

An HSN code (or SAC for services) sets the GST rate on each product. A wrong code applies the wrong rate, sometimes for months — at ₹50 per invoice under Section 125. A 10,000+ code database with name-search means you set it once and never type it again.

  • GSTR-1, GSTR-3B and GSTR-2B come from billing

GSTR-1 reports outward supplies invoice-wise; GSTR-3B is the summary return with tax liability and Input Tax Credit; GSTR-2B is the auto-drafted ITC statement your purchases must reconcile against. Every invoice should feed all three with no re-entry.

  • E-invoicing (IRN) above ₹5 crore turnover

Above ₹5 crore turnover, every B2B invoice needs an IRN from the Invoice Registration Portal. An invoice without a valid IRN is legally invalid and the buyer cannot claim ITC — the penalty is 100% of the tax (CBIC notifications).

  • E-way bills, composition scheme and RCM

Goods worth over ₹50,000 in transit need an e-way bill. Smaller traders may sit under the composition scheme; some transactions fall under the reverse charge mechanism (RCM). Good GST software handles all of this from the master data.

6 GST failures Accountune fixes

The daily billing failures that quietly create penalties

These are not hypothetical. They happen in GST-registered shops across India every month — and each one quietly creates a penalty or an hour of lost time.

  • Problem 01

What happens when an HSN code is wrong?

Owners copy a code from an old bill or guess. A wrong HSN applies the wrong GST rate — sometimes across hundreds of invoices over many months. The notice arrives long after the mistake was made.

    ₹50 per invoice penalty
    Accountune fix

Correct HSN on every invoice — set once, auto-fills forever

A 10,000+ HSN/SAC database. Type the product name, pick the code once, and every future invoice carries the right code and rate automatically.

HSN penalty risk → near zero
  • Problem 02

CGST + SGST or IGST — picked by hand, wrong half the time?

In-state sales need CGST + SGST; inter-state need IGST. Pick wrong on a B2B bill and the buyer's Input Tax Credit fails — and they call you to fix it.

    Buyer's ITC breaks
    Accountune fix

Tax type detected automatically from the customer's state

Select a customer; the software reads their registered state from the GSTIN and applies the right tax type on every invoice — no manual selection.

    Zero wrong tax-type bills
  • Problem 03

Why does GSTR-1 prep eat a whole Sunday?

Owners pull invoices into Excel by hand, then the CA still finds GSTR-2B reconciliation mismatches. Six to eight hours, every month, with errors.

    6–8 hrs/month lost
    Accountune fix

GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B ready in one click

Every invoice feeds the report as you bill. One button at month-end produces a filing-ready GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B — your CA reviews and files in about an hour.

    6–8 hrs/month saved
  • Problem 04

Different GST rates on one invoice — calculated by hand?

Under GST 2.0 a single bill can carry 0%, 5%, 18% and 40% items together. Hand calculation takes ten minutes and still slips.

    Wrong totals on mixed bills
    Accountune fix

Multi-rate GST — correct per item, summary auto-built

Each product keeps its own rate. The invoice calculates every line independently and shows a clean rate-wise summary totalled at the bottom.

    Correct on every line
  • Problem 05

E-way bill on a separate portal — entered twice?

The e-way bill lives on a different government portal where you retype the invoice. Miss one and goods worth over ₹50,000 are held in transit.

    Goods held, double entry
    Accountune fix

E-way bill from the billing screen — data pre-filled

For goods above ₹50,000 the e-way bill is built into billing. Confirm and submit; the number attaches to the invoice automatically — no second login.

No double entry, no held goods
  • Problem 06

E-invoicing not done — invoices invalid above ₹5 crore?

Without a valid IRN, a B2B invoice is legally invalid and the buyer cannot claim ITC. The penalty is 100% of the tax on each non-compliant invoice.

    100% of tax penalty
    Accountune fix

E-invoicing (IRN) generated as you bill

On Growth and Pro plans the IRN is generated from the IRP the moment you raise a B2B invoice — printed on it, no separate portal, no batch uploads.

    Every B2B invoice IRN-valid

Setup to first invoice — under 45 minutes

How Accountune works for GST billing — from day one

No IT person, no consultant. Most owners complete setup and raise their first GST-compliant invoice within 45 minutes of signing up.

  1. STEP 0115–30 min for 50–200 products

Set up your catalogue with HSN and GST rate — one time

Add each product with name, selling price, GST rate (0%, 5%, 18% or 40%) and HSN code from the built-in 10,000+ code database. Already have an Excel list? Bulk import loads everything in one step. Set once — every future invoice carries the right code and rate.

  2. STEP 021–2 min per regular customer

    Add customers with their GSTIN

Add regular customers with name, mobile and GSTIN. The software reads each customer's registered state, so the right tax type — CGST+SGST or IGST — is applied automatically at billing. Walk-ins can be billed without a profile.

  3. STEP 038–12 seconds per transaction

Bill in under 10 seconds — GST applied automatically

Search the product or scan the barcode; price, HSN and GST rate auto-fill. Pick the customer and the tax type is detected. Multi-rate items calculate separately. Print or send the GST invoice on WhatsApp in one tap.

  4. STEP 041 click at month end

File GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B without manual work

Every invoice feeds the returns in the background. At month-end, GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B download in filing-ready format and your CA files in about an hour. Above ₹5 crore, e-invoicing (IRN) and e-way bills are generated in-app.

How to choose GST billing software in India — the complete checklist

Score every shortlisted tool against these seven checks before paying. Software that fails even two is likely to cause friction within the first month.

  • Auto tax type

    Does it auto-apply CGST/SGST/IGST — not manual?

Manual tax selection is the most common B2B error. The software should read the customer's state from their GSTIN and pick the tax type itself.

    Accountune

Detects the state on every invoice and applies the right tax type automatically — zero manual selection.

  • One-click returns

Are GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B one click, not rebuilt in Excel?

Returns should be generated from billing data. Ask to see a filing-ready GSTR-1 produced from real invoices.

    Accountune

Builds filing-ready GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B with one button at month end — the CA files in an hour.

  • HSN database

Is the HSN/SAC database built in?

A 10,000+ HSN/SAC database with name search means you set the code once and never type it again. No database means guesswork and wrong rates.

    Accountune

Ships 10,000+ HSN and SAC codes — type the product name and pick the code once.

  • IRN + e-way

Does it do e-invoicing (IRN) and e-way bills?

Above ₹5 crore, e-invoicing is mandatory; goods over ₹50,000 need an e-way bill. Both should be in-app.

    Accountune

Generates the IRN from the IRP and the e-way bill from the billing screen — no separate portal.

  • Cloud + mobile

Does it work on mobile and browser — not Windows-only?

Desktop-only software ties you to one PC. You should bill and check dues from a phone, tablet or laptop with real-time sync.

    Accountune

Fully cloud-based — Android, iOS and any browser, unlimited devices, no install.

  • CA access

Is CA remote read-only access included?

Your CA should pull reports directly with a separate login — no file exports, no weekend visits. Most tools in this range don't offer it.

    Accountune

Includes CA remote read-only access on every plan — saving 2–4 hours a month.

  • 3-year cost

Have you compared three-year total cost — not headline price?

Add renewals, AMC and add-ons. Tally Silver is ₹26,550 one-time + ₹4,500/yr TSS; some 'cheap' plans exclude GSTR-1.

    Accountune

₹799–₹4,490/year all-in — cloud, mobile, CA access and GST included, no hidden renewals.

The GST billing handbook

Type a keyword or pick a category. Everything a GST-registered owner asks before switching is one keystroke away.

20 answersUpdated Q2 2026
  • GST basics

What is online GST billing software?

It is a cloud application that creates GST-compliant tax invoices — with a GSTIN, HSN/SAC code, the correct CGST/SGST or IGST split and an invoice series — and rolls them into GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B returns. Because it is online, you use it from a browser or phone with nothing to install.

  • GST basics

How does Accountune apply CGST, SGST and IGST automatically?

It reads the customer's registered state from their GSTIN. Same-state sales get CGST + SGST (half each); inter-state sales get IGST at the full rate — applied on every invoice with no manual selection.

  • GST basics

What are the GST rate slabs under GST 2.0?

Since 22 September 2025 the structure is four slabs — 0%, 5%, 18% and 40%. Accountune stores each product's rate and calculates multi-rate bills correctly, line by line.

  • Returns & compliance

Does Accountune file GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B?

Accountune builds filing-ready GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B from your invoices automatically. You download them in one click at month-end and file on the GST portal, or your CA does — usually in about an hour.

  • Returns & compliance

    Does Accountune support e-invoicing (IRN)?

Yes, on the Growth and Pro plans. For businesses above ₹5 crore turnover, the IRN is generated from the Invoice Registration Portal the moment you raise a B2B invoice — no separate portal or batch upload.

  • Returns & compliance

When do I need an e-way bill, and does Accountune generate it?

An e-way bill is needed for goods worth over ₹50,000 in transit. Accountune generates it from the billing screen with the invoice data pre-filled, and attaches the number to the invoice.

  • Returns & compliance

What is GSTR-2B reconciliation, and does Accountune do it?

GSTR-2B is the auto-drafted Input Tax Credit statement your purchases must match. Accountune's GSTR-2B reconciliation (Growth and Pro) flags mismatches so you claim only valid ITC.

  • Features & devices

Does Accountune have a built-in HSN/SAC code database?

Yes — 10,000+ HSN and SAC codes are built in. You search by product name, pick the code once during setup, and every future invoice carries the right code and rate.

  • Features & devices

Can I use Accountune on mobile and a browser?

Yes. Accountune is fully cloud-based and works on Android, iOS, Windows and any modern browser, on unlimited devices, with real-time sync — no installation.

  • Features & devices

Can I send GST invoices on WhatsApp?

Yes. Every GST invoice can be sent to the customer's WhatsApp as a PDF in one tap, for both cash and credit customers; printing is also available.

  • Features & devices

Does Accountune work for non-GST or composition businesses?

Yes. It supports both GST and non-GST billing from the same interface. Unregistered shops issue regular bills without tax fields; when they register later, all product, customer and billing history continues unchanged.

  • Pricing & plans

    How much does Accountune cost?

Three yearly plans: Lite ₹799, Growth ₹1,849 and Pro ₹4,490. All include GST billing, cloud and mobile access. No hidden costs and no per-transaction charges.

  • Pricing & plans

    Is there a free trial?

Yes — a free trial with full feature access and no credit card required. You choose a plan only when you are confident.

  • Pricing & plans

Can Accountune handle multiple GSTINs or branches?

Yes, on the Pro plan. Multi-GSTIN / multi-location lets you manage several registrations from one account, each handled separately.

  • Compare & migrate

How is Accountune different from Tally?

Tally is desktop-first with a one-time licence of ₹26,550 (Silver) plus ₹4,500/yr TSS, and mobile is view-only. Accountune is cloud-first from ₹799/year, with full mobile billing, native WhatsApp invoicing and built-in e-invoicing.

  • Compare & migrate

How does Accountune compare with Zoho Books?

Zoho Books Standard is ₹8,988/year + GST and priced per organisation, so multiple GSTINs multiply the cost. Accountune starts at ₹799/year, includes multi-GSTIN on Pro and has native WhatsApp invoicing built for Indian retail.

  • Compare & migrate

Can I migrate from Tally or Vyapar to Accountune?

Yes. Free migration help is included with any paid plan — the team imports your data, typically within 24–48 hours, and you can run both systems in parallel during the switch.

  • Access & security

Can my CA access my GST data?

Yes. CA remote read-only access is included on every plan, so your accountant pulls GSTR reports directly with their own login — no file exports.

  • Access & security

    Is my data safe?

Data is stored on AWS India servers with 256-bit AES encryption and hourly automatic backups. If a device is lost or damaged, everything is recoverable by logging in from any other device.

  • Access & security

Which businesses is Accountune's GST billing best for?

Indian SMEs that raise GST invoices daily — kirana, medical, hardware, electronics, garments and wholesale — plus multi-state B2B sellers, ₹5 crore+ businesses needing e-invoicing, and owners who want to bill from mobile.
