What is GSTIN?

GSTIN — India's 15-Digit Business Identity Number

GSTIN stands for Goods and Services Tax Identification Number. It is a unique 15-digit alphanumeric code assigned by the Government of India to every business registered under the GST regime. Every GST-registered business — from a small kirana store to a large manufacturer — gets its own GSTIN. This number appears on every GST invoice, every return, and every compliance document.

Without a valid GSTIN on your supplier's invoice, you cannot claim Input Tax Credit (ITC) — which means you are paying tax you cannot recover. That one reason alone makes GSTIN verification essential before every transaction with a new supplier or vendor.

GSTIN Structure

How to Read Any GSTIN Number

Every GSTIN follows a fixed 15-character pattern. Once you understand the structure, you can decode basic information about any business — state, PAN, registration count — just from the number itself.

1–2
State Code
First 2 digits indicate the state of GST registration. 27 = Maharashtra, 09 = UP, 29 = Karnataka.
3–12
PAN Number
Next 10 characters are the PAN of the business owner or company — the core identifier of the taxpayer.
13
Entity Number
Shows how many GSTINs are registered under the same PAN in that state. Usually 1.
14
Always "Z"
This position is always the alphabet Z by default in every valid Indian GSTIN.
15
Check Code
Last character is a check digit — number or alphabet — used for GSTIN validation and error detection.

Why Verify?

6 Reasons to Always Verify GSTIN Before a Transaction

Skipping GSTIN verification is one of the most common and costly mistakes small business owners make. Here is exactly what you protect when you verify first.

💰
Protect Your ITC Claims
Invalid or cancelled GSTIN means you cannot claim Input Tax Credit. Verify before payment — not after.
🚫
Detect Fake Invoices
Fraudsters use non-existent or stolen GSTINs on fake invoices. One verification catches this instantly.
📋
Avoid GST Notices
Wrong GSTINs on your returns trigger automatic mismatches on the GST portal — leading to penalty notices.
🤝
Verify Business is Real
An active GSTIN confirms the business is genuinely registered. Basic due diligence before any new vendor.
Apply Correct Tax (CGST/IGST)
State code in GSTIN tells you whether to charge CGST+SGST or IGST. Getting this wrong creates filing problems.
E-Invoice Accuracy
E-invoices submitted to the GST portal are validated against GSTIN. Invalid numbers cause immediate rejection.
